Gwat - paper pulp painting series and workshop, March 2022

plant material and found images

Workshop co-created with Rianne Svelnis and hosted at Odd Meridian Arts Society.

“Gwat” is the romanization of the Cantonese word for “bone”. This series is a study of plants in winter and an imagining of our shared skeletons. After the flowers and leaves are gone, the stems and sticks left add subtle texture and structure to our environment which can be seen reflected in ourselves.

Shown in tandem with a pulp paper painting workshop with a somatic component. The workshop started off with a somatic process, then participants were lead through the process of transforming used paper, mixed with found plant materials, to create a pulp painting. Themes include: bones, decomposition, digestion, cycles, subtle structure, and entanglement with the beauty in both living, decaying and ‘waste’ material.
